The indirect election by Estonia's Riigikogu on September 2, 2026, requires broad cross-party support or a two-thirds majority, which has kept probabilities tightly clustered as parties weigh consensus figures after incumbent Alar Karis declined a second term. Ülle Madise, the chancellor of justice, has gained traction as a potential unifying nominee backed by Reform, SDE, and Eesti 200, while EKRE's declared candidate Mart Helme anchors opposition support. Other names including Jonatan Vseviov, Maive Rute, and Riho Ühtegi remain under discussion, with outcomes hinging on late-August nominations and parliamentary negotiations that could either secure an early winner or shift the process to the electoral college. This fragmented landscape sustains even odds across contenders until clearer alliances form.
