Japan’s 10-year government bond yield, recently trading near 2.90% after touching multi-decade highs above 2.93%, reflects accelerating monetary policy normalization by the Bank of Japan. The policy rate now stands at 1.0% following the June hike, with officials signaling potential further tightening as soon as September amid core inflation forecasts exceeding the 2% target and yen weakness amplifying imported price pressures. Reduced JGB purchase volumes and fiscal concerns over debt servicing costs have also lifted term premia, supporting the 66.5% market-implied probability of yields ending 2026 above 3.0%. Upcoming BOJ meetings and inflation data releases remain key near-term catalysts for shifts in these probabilities.
