Iceland’s referendum on resuming EU accession negotiations, scheduled for 29 August 2026, remains closely balanced due to deep divisions over fisheries rights, national sovereignty, and the euro versus potential economic and security gains from deeper integration. The centre-left coalition government secured parliamentary approval in May 2026 for the non-binding vote on restarting talks frozen since 2013, with the EU Council stating readiness to engage if approved. Public sentiment stays split, with polling showing modestly higher support for reopening negotiations than for eventual membership, tempered by concerns that the fisheries chapter could prove contentious. Trader odds near 55% for a “yes” reflect this competitive dynamic, where late-campaign developments on sectoral protections or external geopolitical pressures could shift the outcome either way before voting concludes.

This market will resolve to "Yes" if Iceland passes this referendum. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No".
If the election is officially rescheduled to a date prior to December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, the same rule applies to the new ballot and its corresponding deadlines. This market will resolve to "no" if no qualifying referendum vote is passed by December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, or if such a referendum is scheduled to be held later than such date.
The resolution source will be based on the official certified results of the vote as published by the National Electoral Commission of Iceland. Subsequent litigation, administrative challenges, or failure of any post-approval implementation steps will not be considered.
