Monetary policy divergence between the Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan remains the dominant driver of USD/JPY positioning, with the pair trading near 159.3 as of August 19, 2026 after coordinated Japan-U.S. intervention capped gains in early August. Persistent U.S. yield advantages and Fed rate expectations have supported dollar strength, while BOJ normalization efforts and yen-buying actions have introduced volatility around the 155-160 range. Traders monitor upcoming FOMC and BOJ meetings alongside inflation and labor data releases, as further narrowing of the rate differential could pressure the pair lower toward year-end forecasts ranging from 150 to 164, whereas sustained U.S. resilience may push toward higher levels. Market-implied odds reflect this uncertainty in real capital at risk.
