The 2026 first-overall pick from Indiana has served strictly as backup through the opener against Miami and into Week 2 preparations versus the Chargers, with the team emphasizing his on-field observation and practice reps to refine footwork and progressions behind an experienced signal-caller. Preseason results showed Cousins more efficient in limited action while Mendoza posted mixed numbers, reinforcing the bridge-quarterback approach. With Aidan O'Connell unavailable for personal reasons, Mendoza sits one injury away from reps but faces no roster or performance pressure for an immediate promotion. Any shift would likely require sustained Cousins struggles or a sharp Mendoza surge in practice, factors traders weigh against the club's stated developmental patience.
