Iceland’s closely contested referendum on resuming EU accession negotiations, scheduled for 29 August 2026, reflects a divided electorate weighing economic integration and security ties against concerns over fisheries policy, sovereignty, and the euro. The centre-left coalition government under Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir secured parliamentary approval in spring 2026 following its December 2024 coalition pledge, reviving talks suspended since 2013. Recent polls show narrow margins on restarting negotiations, with turnout and campaign emphasis on domestic priorities such as resource management likely decisive. A yes vote would open talks without committing to membership, which would require a second referendum, leaving room for late shifts in sentiment ahead of the vote.
