The elevated 88% implied probability of no change at the Bank of Japan’s October 29–30 meeting reflects trader consensus that policymakers will deliver a 25-basis-point hike to 1.25% at the September 17–18 gathering, consistent with recent surveys showing unanimous expectations for that move amid underlying CPI near the 2% target and persistent yen weakness. Following the June increase to 1%, markets price a measured normalization path with the next adjustment more likely in December or January rather than a back-to-back October hike, as financial conditions remain accommodative and inflation risks have not escalated sufficiently to accelerate the pace. Key upcoming catalysts include the September decision, fresh CPI data, and any shifts in guidance from Governor Ueda.
