Luciano Darderi, the 19th seed and a clay-court specialist with a career 16-39 hard-court record, enters the National Bank Open second round after a first-round bye and a recent retirement on hard courts in Los Cabos. The Italian has never advanced in Montreal. Gabriel Diallo, the Canadian wild card ranked around 108, brings strong home-court form with a positive 23-12 record in Canada and a powerful serve suited to the fast hard courts at IGA Stadium. Diallo opened with a comeback win over Kyrian Jacquet, while Darderi’s recent results remain concentrated on clay. The matchup highlights contrasting surfaces strengths, with Diallo benefiting from crowd support and familiarity in a best-of-three setting.
