Mendoza posted mixed preseason numbers (55.6% completion rate with turnovers) while adjusting to NFL mechanics, under-center work, and the pro playbook, leading to his backup role behind the 38-year-old Cousins. Week 1 saw no regular-season snaps for the rookie in a win over Miami, and he remains second on the depth chart heading into Week 2 against the Chargers with Aidan O’Connell unavailable. Key variables include Cousins’ early results, Mendoza’s practice reps and readiness, Brock Bowers’ injury status, and the team’s willingness to accelerate the timeline for their franchise quarterback prospect.
