Iceland's closely contested August 29 referendum on resuming EU accession negotiations reflects a near-even split in public opinion, with recent polls showing yes support hovering between 50% and 52% against 48%. The centre-left coalition government under Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir advanced the vote after parliamentary approval in May, highlighting Iceland's existing EEA obligations without voting rights in EU decisions. Domestic debates center on fisheries sovereignty, economic alignment, and Arctic security amid ongoing regional tensions, creating balanced trader expectations around the 53% implied probability for passage. Late-campaign developments, turnout among key voter groups, or shifts in polling margins ahead of the ballot could tip the outcome in either direction.
