Thorsten Kornblum holds a commanding lead in trader consensus for the Braunschweig mayoral election due to his status as incumbent SPD Oberbürgermeister since 2021 and strong performance in the first-round voting on September 13, 2026. Partial results placed him well ahead of challengers including Mirco Hanker of the AfD and Maximilian Pohler of the CDU, reflecting broad name recognition, established local governance record, and a fragmented field of nine candidates. With no outright majority likely, the September 27 runoff between the top two contenders favors Kornblum based on his first-ballot margin and party infrastructure. Late shifts in turnout or coalition dynamics between runoff opponents could still alter the outcome in this direct-election system.
