Juncheng Shang enters this US Open first-round matchup as the clear trader favorite against veteran Marco Trungelliti, driven by the 21-year-old Chinese left-hander’s superior hard-court credentials and recent form despite a limited 2026 schedule. Shang, ranked around 228 after a career-high of 47, posted a notable win over Andrey Rublev in Montreal and has compiled a stronger hard-court win rate than his opponent, though he has played just 12 matches this year following an earlier injury layoff. Trungelliti, 36 and ranked 83, excels primarily on clay with most of his titles on that surface and holds a modest 3-9 hard-court main-draw record; his prior US Open appearances have yielded only one second-round result. With no prior head-to-head and both players showing mixed recent results on the surface, the matchup highlights Shang’s youth and baseline aggression against the Argentine’s experience in a best-of-five format on outdoor hard courts.
