Alex Michelsen enters this National Bank Open third-round hard-court matchup as the clear favorite, building on a strong recent stretch that includes a straight-sets win over Francisco Cerundolo and a quarterfinal appearance at the event last year. The American holds a 1-0 head-to-head edge after defeating Daniel Merida Aguilar 6-3, 6-4 on hard courts earlier in 2026 at Indian Wells. Merida Aguilar, ranked well outside the top 100, arrives on the back of the biggest win of his career, upsetting 24th-seeded Ugo Humbert in the previous round, but faces a significant step up in opponent class and experience against a player with deeper Masters-level results. Both competitors have navigated the early rounds without reported injury concerns, and the match is set for outdoor hard courts in Montreal.
