Taylor Fritz enters the Cincinnati Open third-round matchup as the heavy favorite against 21-year-old Spaniard Daniel Mérida Aguilar, reflecting trader consensus around the American’s top-10 ranking, superior hard-court experience, and strong 2026 form that includes a recent Washington title plus consistent Masters-level results. Fritz, who advanced after a first-round bye and straight-sets win over Alex Michelsen, benefits from greater depth in big-match play and physical resilience on outdoor hard courts despite managing minor discomfort from the summer swing. Mérida Aguilar, a rising talent who reached a career-high ranking of No. 40 after claiming the Croatia Open and posting a 16-8 record this season, brings aggressive baseline play and recent momentum but limited exposure against top-10 opponents. The surface favors Fritz’s serve and court coverage, while the young Spaniard’s path to an upset would require capitalizing on any fatigue or early errors in what projects as a lopsided contest.
