Zhizhen Zhang enters the US Open qualifying first-round match against Rei Sakamoto with greater ATP experience, including prior main-draw appearances at the event, though his 2026 record stands at 6-11 and his ranking has slipped to the mid-150s after a career high of 31. The 20-year-old Sakamoto, a Japanese prospect with a career-high ranking of 148 achieved in June 2026, has posted stronger recent results on the Challenger circuit and holds a modest 1-6 ATP-level mark. Both players compete on hard courts, where Zhang’s powerful serve and return game contrast with Sakamoto’s athletic baseline play and improving consistency. Their limited head-to-head features a February 2026 encounter in Brisbane, and recent form, physical freshness, and adaptation to Flushing Meadows conditions will shape the outcome in this best-of-three-set qualifier.
