Tommy Paul enters the National Bank Open second round as a clear favorite against qualifier Valentin Royer, reflecting his higher ranking near the top 20-25, stronger recent results, and greater hard-court experience at ATP Masters 1000 level. Royer, ranked around 78 with a career high of 54 earlier in 2026, advanced by defeating Pablo Carreno Busta but carries a modest 3-16 win-loss record this season. The pair has no prior head-to-head history. Paul's consistent form and seeding provide a substantial edge on the Montreal hard courts, though Royer's momentum from his first-round result introduces limited upset potential in this matchup.
