Juan Manuel Cerundolo, ranked around No. 51 and a left-hander with a solid overall record, faces lucky loser Arthur Gea in the US Open first round on outdoor hard courts. Gea, the 21-year-old Frenchman ranked near No. 86-87, earned his main-draw spot after Casper Ruud’s back-injury withdrawal and carries strong recent momentum from capturing his maiden ATP title at Los Cabos in late July on the same surface, where he defeated higher-ranked opponents including Francisco Cerundolo. Cerundolo reached the Winston-Salem quarterfinals but has shown mixed hard-court form this summer, while Gea’s rapid ranking climb and positive hard-court results position the matchup as competitive despite the ranking gap.
