Matteo Berrettini enters this US Open first-round matchup as the clear favorite against Stan Wawrinka, buoyed by superior recent form and physical conditioning despite his own injury history. The pair contested a grueling four-tiebreak Wimbledon opener just two months ago, where Berrettini prevailed after more than four hours, saving multiple set points in a marathon second-set breaker. Wawrinka, the 2016 champion here and now 41, received a late wild card for what appears to be his final Grand Slam appearance, adding emotional motivation but little momentum—he sits on a five-match losing streak and ranks outside the top 100. Berrettini’s powerful serve and forehand have carried him to a French Open quarterfinal and strong US Open Series showings, while his hard-court record and consistency beyond opening rounds favor him on the faster surface. The veteran’s trademark backhand and experience keep upset potential alive in extended rallies, though age and recent results tilt trader consensus heavily toward the Italian.
