The open Göttingen mayoral race on September 13, 2026, features four main candidates after incumbent Petra Broistedt (SPD) declined to run again, creating an unusually competitive field in Niedersachsen. Florian Dinger (SPD) and Onyeka Oshionwu (Greens, backed by Volt) lead trader pricing in a tight contest, with Ehsan Kangarani (CDU, supported by FDP) and Thomas Goes (Die Linke) trailing. The balance stems from an open seat, local priorities around fiscal pressures, affordable housing, and climate adaptation, plus cross-party endorsements and a diverse electorate where no single bloc dominates. A runoff on September 27 is possible if no candidate exceeds 50 percent in the first round. Late campaign events, turnout among younger voters, or shifts in coalition signals could widen the gap ahead of election day.
