Recent inflation data at 4.1% for the June 2026 quarter, driven by elevated fuel prices amid Middle East tensions, prompted the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to raise the Official Cash Rate by 25 basis points to 2.75% in early September. This followed a similar July hike, shifting policy toward gradual removal of stimulus while core measures remain nearer target and long-term expectations stay anchored near 2%. Markets price an October 28 hold at 71.5% implied probability, reflecting the interim review’s data-dependent stance and desire to assess prior tightening effects before further moves. A 25 basis point increase carries 27.5% odds, consistent with some bank forecasts of additional tightening by year-end if oil-driven pressures persist. The December Monetary Policy Statement represents the next major catalyst.
