These moves occur against the backdrop of a July 2026 Houthi maritime embargo targeting Saudi-linked vessels, which followed Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz and prompted attacks on tankers, insurance withdrawals, and sharp drops in daily transits to roughly 35–45 vessels from prior peaks above 70. Saudi crude loadings via the strait have fallen markedly, with many operators rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope or seeking exemptions, while traffic remains well below normal despite Houthis stating they seek only selective restrictions rather than full closure. A Saudi-backed multinational maritime coalition has formed to protect navigation, but ongoing clashes and selective strikes continue to sustain elevated risk premiums and reduced volumes through this critical chokepoint.
