Alexander Zverev enters the US Open first-round matchup against Lorenzo Sonego as the top seed and heavy favorite, buoyed by his French Open title earlier in 2026 and a 46-13 season record that includes a Wimbledon final. The German leads their head-to-head 6-0 across surfaces, with the most recent win coming on hard courts in Beijing last fall. Sonego, ranked around No. 91 with a 12-15 record this year and a sub-.500 hard-court mark, has shown flashes in qualifying-style events like Winston-Salem but lacks the consistency or weapons to challenge top players on this surface. Zverev’s superior serve, return game, and baseline depth have repeatedly neutralized Sonego’s aggression in past encounters, setting up a strong implied probability of advancement despite any early-tournament rust.
