Juncheng Shang enters the US Open first-round matchup against Marco Trungelliti with a significant edge in hard-court pedigree despite a ranking of 228 after multiple injury layoffs, while the 36-year-old Argentine sits at No. 83 with a 5-5 hard-court record in 2026. Shang’s recent North American swing featured a notable upset over Andrey Rublev in Montreal—saving match points in the decider—followed by an early exit in Cincinnati, underscoring both his talent and ongoing fitness questions after limited action since February. Trungelliti arrives with stronger recent momentum, including main-draw wins over Kei Nishikori and qualifiers in Cincinnati before a second-round loss to Daniil Medvedev. With no prior head-to-head and both players holding five hard-court victories this season, the contest hinges on Shang’s ability to sustain performance over best-of-five sets on outdoor hard courts versus Trungelliti’s veteran experience and return game.
