Juncheng Shang faces Lorenzo Sonego in the Cincinnati Open first round on outdoor hard courts, pitting the 21-year-old Chinese left-hander against the higher-ranked Italian veteran. Shang, who reached a career-high of No. 47 before a left-foot injury sidelined him for much of 2025, has shown positive signs in his return and defeated Sonego in straight sets at the Hong Kong Open earlier this year. Sonego, currently ranked No. 88 after a wrist issue earlier in 2026, brings greater Masters 1000 experience and recent hard-court results but faces a motivated opponent with improving movement and confidence post-surgery. The surface favors both players' baseline games, with Shang's youth and recent H2H edge potentially offsetting the ranking gap in this early-round encounter.
