Rafael Jodar enters the Cincinnati Open second round as the higher-ranked player at world No. 11-15 with a strong 2026 season that includes quarterfinal appearances at Madrid and Rome plus a career-high ranking achieved in early August. The 19-year-old Spaniard received a first-round bye and has shown consistent hard-court form on outdoor surfaces. Denis Shapovalov, ranked No. 48, leads their head-to-head 1-0 after a straight-sets win over Jodar in Dallas earlier this month, but the Canadian has battled ongoing lower-body issues, including an ankle sprain from the Los Cabos final that forced a retirement in Montreal. Shapovalov’s recent physical concerns and recovery timeline represent the primary uncertainty heading into the matchup on hard courts.
