Pete Crow-Armstrong has surged to overwhelming market dominance in the 2026 NL MVP race through a five-tool breakout season for the Chicago Cubs, leading MLB in fWAR and bWAR while posting a .279 average with 41 home runs, 98 RBIs, 36 stolen bases, and elite center-field defense that has produced the most outs above average among outfielders. This combination of power, speed, baserunning, and durability has created separation from Shohei Ohtani, whose knee injury has sidelined him from the mound since July and limited his two-way impact despite solid hitting production. Other contenders trail far behind in cumulative value. A late Ohtani pitching return and hot finish or an unexpected late slump by Crow-Armstrong remain the primary scenarios that could narrow the gap before November voting.
